On this one day, all of Kiwanis around the world will be doing a service project.
People's Resource Center Food Market
Event Date / Time
4/2/11 (8:30 AM - 12:00 PM)
We assist in the Food Market of the People's Resource Center. The Food Market is where underpriviledged families receive groceries. It is set up like a grocery store and the clients can "shop" for their food. We sort food, stock shelves, and assist clients with selecting their items.
Please dress comfortably and casually. Jeans and gym shoes are fine. It can get a little cold in the food pantry in the winter, so please dress accordingly.
Please do not park in the parking lot directly outside of the building. Street parking is available.
We have been asked by the Key Club Convention Committee to help out again with Sgt-At-Arms for the convention. We will need volunteers to help patrol the hall to make sure everyone is in their room after curfew and there is no "monkey business: going on.
*** NOTE: We are looking for volunteers on Friday and Saturday night from 12:00 Midnight to 2:00AM. Just a 2-hour shift each night. Please sign up for which night you can help. Thank you!!
A Just Harvest's Community Kitchen began as a ministry of the Good News Community Church (United Church of Christ) in 1983. In the beginning, we served meals a few days per week. Today, with the help of more than 40 partnering organizations and nearly 10,000 volunteer hours, our Community Kitchen is the largest and only self-standing community soup kitchen in the Chicago metro area. We serve hot, nutritious meals 365 days per year to anyone in need. Last year, the Community Kitchen served more than 54,000 meals.
What to Wear
For safety reasons, you must wear pants and closed toed shoes, even in the dog days of summer. You will be handling hot food and beverages, and dressing accordingly will help protect you against burns or other accidents. We provide hairnets and gloves (required by the health department) and aprons.
What to Bring
Bring your spirit of service and camaraderie! We serve 150+ meals nightly, and we couldn't do it without the collaborative energy of volunteers. Be prepared to work hard and have fun.
Money to feed the meter - Parking outside the Kitchen is metered and costs $1 per hour. Chicago parking meters now accept credit cards.
Please leave your valuables at home. Coats will be stored in the back, but will not be locked up. Please leave purses, Ipods, jewelry, and other valuables at home. A Just Harvest will not be responsible for any items lost or stolen.
WE HAVE A LIMIT OF 6 VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS PROJECT, so sign up fast!
4:15 - 4:30 p.m. Arrive at the Kitchen, get settled, washed, and put on uniforms
